Hyaluronic acid - what is it and how is it used?

4.7/5 - (25 votes)

Few people know that hyaluronic acid is a natural part of the human body. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in the connective tissues of the body, such as joints and skin. Glycosaminoglycans are simply long unbranched carbohydrates or sugars, called polysaccharides.

With the hype around anti-aging, hyaluronic acid has become a huge phenomenon, as it is a really effective and proven method of smoothing out wrinkles or plumping (for example) lips.

How does it work ?

Hyaluronic acid can bind water up to 1000 times its weight! In other words, hyaluronic acid acts like a sponge that holds water molecules in the skin. Skin that has enough hyaluronic acid in it then looks supple and hydrated.

The problem is that hyaluronic acid is lost in the structures of our skin as we age, which causes wrinkles, sagging skin, folds, thin lips, etc. to form on our face. Moreover, as we age, the volume of our fat, muscles, or bones decreases, which further increases this effect.

Fortunately, today we can replenish the lost hyaluronic acid in the skin with needle or cannula injections. Such an application will add back lost volume to the face, find wrinkles and fine lines, and make the face look much fuller and younger. Hyaluronic acid application is now quite common and is undergone by clients (and clients, of course) all over the world. It is a very safe and almost painless method of rejuvenation that you really don't have to worry about.

In addition, the effects are visible immediately after treatment.

Types of sour fillingshyaluronic acid

Although all hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are based on the same molecule, manufacturers vary a number of physical and chemical properties in part to affect the results and focus of their products.

Adjustments include the particle size of the hyaluronic acid used, the degree of cross-linking between the molecules, the concentration of hyaluronic acid, and the consistency and viscosity of the gel.

These variations result in small differences in the efficacy, durability, and suitability of application areas of different dermal fillers. Therefore, we have decided to briefly describe to you the various products we use in our salon. These are truly top products from top manufacturers with guaranteed quality.

Hyaluronic acid Juvederm brand

Juvederm is a group of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers that includes the following products;

  • Juvederm Voluma XC: Adds volume to the cheeks and mid-face
  • Juvederm Ultra XC: For lip augmentation and smile line correction
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC: For nasolabial (lines around the nose) and smile lines - lasts a little longer than Ultra XC
  • Juvederm Volbella XC: Lip augmentation and correction of perioral (around the mouth) wrinkles
  • Juvederm Vollure XC: Treats lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth, including nasolabial folds and smile lines

The hyaluronic acid used in Voluma, Volbella and Vollure is highly concentrated and cross-linked to deliver long-lasting results.

All Juvederm XC products are pre-mixed with a numbing agent (lidocaine) to reduce discomfort from injections.

Hyaluronic acid brands Restylane

Restylane is a line of hyaluronic acid fillers that includes:

  • Restylane Silk: is specially designed to gently plump the lips and smooth wrinkles around the mouth. It consists of a gel that is smaller and smoother than other Restylane products, resulting in a softer, more subtle result. It is also ideal for lip highlighting. In addition, it is characterized by the fact that it is administered using a very fine needle, which can achieve greater precision in application.
  • Restylane:  corrects medium to deep wrinkles and lines, such as nasolabial folds, we use Restylane-L for lip augmentation because it contains lidocaine
  • Restylane Lyft: adds volume to the cheeks and treats moderate to severe expression lines and wrinkles. Lyft is the first and only hyaluronic acid filler used to correct lack of volume on the back of the hands.

How often do the applications need to be repeated?

In our experience, application results and longevity vary from patient to patient and are influenced by the age of the patient and the individual characteristics of the patient's skin.

When used to correct lines, wrinkles and depressions on the face, hyaluronic acid fillers last an average of 12 to 18 months. When large volumes are injected to augment the cheeks or sculpt the jawline, corrections can last up to 24 months.

In contrast, lip augmentation with fillers takes six to nine months.

Generally speaking, lip corrections usually last at least 6 months, but corrections in the nasolabial folds, for example, last from 9-12 months.

After this time, the effect begins to diminish. In order to maintain the results with hyaluronic acid lip fillers, it is necessary to repeat the treatment at regular intervals.

What corrections is hyaluronic acid used for?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are quite versatile and can be used effectively to achieve a variety of goals in different areas of the face and body.

  • Wrinkle removal
  • Smoothing of nasolabial folds
  • Smoothing of marionette lines
  • Adjustment of lips and their contours
  • Locating fine lines around the mouth
  • Locating wrinkles around the eyes
  • Cheek magnification
  • Earlobe corrections

For whom is hyaluronic acid not suitable?

Hyaluronic acid is not recommended for patients who have:

  • Active herpetic infection of the face or mouth
  • Infection in the treated area
  • Untreated diabetes
  • Blood clotting problems
  • Allergy to any of the components of hyaluronic acid injection
  • Whether women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

Is injectable hyaluronic acid painful?

The application of hyaluronic acid is an almost painless procedure. To improve patient comfort, we use preparations that contain Mesocain. The patient feels a slight sting - similar to a bee sting. Hyaluronic acid is SAFE when used correctly. Rarely, it can cause allergic reactions.

What products do we use in applications?

We want only the best for our patients, which is why we only use genuine, quality products from brands like Juvederm, Dermastyle and Restylane.

What result can I expect?

It is said, "Better seen once than heard a hundred times." So take a look at one of our patients who recently had hyaluronic acid applied.

  1. I also had a hyaluronic acid treatment with her - I can highly recommend it! Very pleasant demeanor, and an amazing result that doesn't compare to the cheap replacements I've tried before with competitors.
