How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by means of a laser that emits a beam of light. This light beam is absorbed by melanin (skin pigment) in the hair. This process generates heat that affects the hair follicle, damaging it to such an extent that it prevents further hair growth. Since the laser acts on hairs in different growth phases, multiple sessions are necessary to ensure permanent hair removal. Modern epilation lasers are equipped with technologies that cool the surrounding skin, ensuring comfort for the client during the laser treatment.

Currently, there are 3 types of laser devices for laser hair removal: Alexandrite laser, YAG laser, and Diode laser. IPL is not a laser; it is a less effective technology.

What device do we use for laser hair removal ?

In our clinic, you will find the laser CANDELA gentleLASE PRO. Gentle Pro lasers have been leading laser systems for over 20 years in laser hair removal. It is truly a top-tier machine from the USA, used in the best clinics worldwide. This device uses an alexandrite laser with a wavelength of 755 nm, which allows precise targeting of hair follicles while minimizing the risk of damage to the surrounding skin. The Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) system protects the skin by cooling it before and after the laser pulse, ensuring a painless experience for the patient.

How is CANDELA gentleLASE PRO better than regular IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a light-based treatment commonly found in beauty salons, uses a broader spectrum of light that is less intense than a true laser. In practice, this means the treatment is much less effective, requires more sessions, and the results are not as convincing as those achieved with the CANDELA gentleLASE PRO.

CANDELA gentleLASE PRO or diode laser?

Both devices, the Candela GentleLase Pro and the diode laser, are effective tools for hair removal. For patients with fair skin and dark (or medium-dark) hair, the Candela GentleLase Pro is generally more effective than the diode laser. On the other hand, the Alexandrite laser is less suitable for clients with darker skin, because the laser targets melanin (the dark pigment) in the hair. Melanin is also present in the skin of people with darker complexions — and when there is little contrast between the dark skin tone and the hair, the laser cannot accurately target the hair, which may reduce its effectiveness. For fair skin with dark (or medium-dark) hair, this contrast is greater, allowing the laser to precisely target the hair while minimizing the risk of damaging the surrounding skin.

How much will I save if I have laser hair removal?

How to prepare for laser hair removal?

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 3 weeks before the procedure, as tanned skin can increase the risk of irritation or hyperpigmentation. If you plan to be in the sun, use a sunscreen with SPF 50. Avoid tanning the treated area for three weeks after the treatment to prevent pigment spots.
  • Do not remove hair by waxing, plucking, or depilatory devices for 4 weeks before the procedure – the laser needs to target the hair follicle, and its removal can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Shaving the area before the procedure is allowed.
  • Shave the hair with a razor one day before the treatment so the laser can act directly on the hair follicle, not on the hair above the skin.
  • Do not use creams, perfumed products, or deodorants on the treated area on the day of the procedure. The skin should be clean, dry, and free of makeup, deodorant, or body lotion.
  • If you take photosensitive medications (e.g., certain antibiotics, retinoids), consult with a specialist as they may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the laser.
  • After the procedure, the skin may be slightly red and sensitive – this is normal and usually subsides within a few hours to days. It is recommended to apply soothing gels (e.g., Aloe vera) or creams with panthenol.

Skin Care After Laser Hair Removal

  • Avoid tanning – Do not expose your skin to direct sunlight or visit tanning beds for at least 4 weeks after the treatment.
  • Avoid hot water baths – For at least 24–48 hours, avoid hot baths, saunas, and hot tubs to minimize the risk of irritation.
  • Do not use exfoliants or harsh cosmetic products – Avoid scrubs, scented creams, and products containing alcohol for at least one week after the procedure.
  • Do not shave or pluck hair – After epilation, hair may gradually fall out; do not pluck it with tweezers or wax to avoid affecting the results.
  • Do not irritate the skin – Avoid touching the treated area with dirty hands and refrain from excessive rubbing or scratching.
  • Soothe the skin – After the procedure, the skin may be slightly red and sensitive. Use moisturizing and soothing gels like aloe vera.
  • Protect the skin from the sun – Avoid direct sunlight for at least 4 weeks after treatment and apply sunscreen with SPF 50.
  • Keep the skin hydrated – Regularly apply fragrance-free and gentle moisturizing creams.
  • Wear loose clothing – To avoid irritation, steer clear of tight clothing that might rub against the treated area.

The total number of treatments for complete hair removal is usually 4–7 sessions for women and 6–9 sessions for men. This is because the laser destroys only hairs in the growth phase. However, the number of sessions varies depending on hair density and color. In some cases, an 80% reduction in hair can be observed after just 3 treatments.

Laser hair removal typically requires two to six sessions. The interval between treatments varies depending on the treated area. On average, treatments are needed every 4–8 weeks.

Over time, it is possible that an occasional hair may appear in the treated area. In that case, we recommend a “maintenance session,” where the area is treated once or twice a year to ensure that no hair grows back.

Of course, you will feel the procedure slightly, but we don’t believe it’s anything you couldn’t handle. The risks of side effects vary depending on your skin type, hair color, treatment plan, and how well you follow pre- and post-treatment care instructions. The good news is that they are usually very mild. The most common side effects of laser hair removal include:
